Dental emergencies occur when you least expect them. You may feel sudden pain while you are eating something cold or drinking something hot or biting on something hard or you wake up in the morning and you see your cheek and gum may be swollen and tender. Severe pain may also prevent you from sleeping or continuing your day to day activities. This constitutes a dental emergency.
Dental emergencies can be categorized as such:
Cracked Tooth:
Cracked teeth can lead to bigger problems if ignored. It is imperative that you contact your dentist to have an examination performed immediately to salvage a cracked tooth.
Toothaches:
Achy tooth usually means there could potentially be a larger underlying problem.
During your routine check up with your dentist you may have had a complete oral exam. At that time, the dentist usually discusses all the issues that need to be addressed regarding your oral health. Ignoring these issues will make them get worse. An ignored small filling which is an easy issue to fix will become a big filling which will cost more and decrease the lifespan of that tooth. An ignored big filling, might need a root canal treatment and a crown which costs 4 times more than the cost of the filling, or the tooth might need an extraction which is considered to be a huge loss.
A lost tooth will cost at least $3,500.0 to replace with an implant or a $3,000.0 to replace with a bridge. Any ignored oral health will eventually cost more to fix over time and that is a totally opposite to the goal of saving money if the teeth were ignored originally due to that reason.
Other than the financial cost of your treatment, your dentist will need more time to fix a bigger issue than a smaller issue. A small filling will need less time than a big filling and the prognosis is better for a smaller filling. A root canal treatment will need more time than a regular filling. A filling can be fixed in one or two visits usually, but a root canal treatment and a crown will need a minimum of 3 visits.
In conclusion, it is always wiser to fix your oral health issues as soon as possible. Maintaining a regular visit to your dentist will help also in the early detection of these issues.
